When discussing "Motor Trend [vehicle] of the Year" awards, past winners
have included:
Chevrolet Corvair (1960)
Chevrolet Vega (1971)
Ford Mustang II (1974)
Chevrolet Monza (1975)
AMC Alliance (1983)
My golly, looking at that list makes me think they should rename the
award "The POS of the Year" award.
All the cars cited fall into that unfortunate category, plus some others
that Motor Trend has honored.
On reflection, though, perhaps they mean that the car named will only
hold up for a year.
I have to wonder whether the Cadillac Catera (which GM would love to
disown and forget about) might have qualified. Or maybe the Cadillac
Cimarron...remember that tarted up Chevy?
Ed's revealing information about the "you scratch my back and I'll pay
you off in full-page four color ads" procedure involved certainly pulls
the wool off our eyes.
I think I should build and market a car like a Crosley or King Midget
and then offer Motor Trend a bunch of folding green ad money. These
folks at MT seem not like ink stained wretches, but ink stained whores.

Given these vehicles made the list, I can say my 1980 MGB (last year
made in US) should easily quailfy despite it's propensity to stall in
the middle of the George Washington Bridge (among other places) at
highway speeds...
Nothing like having a TT bearing down on your stalled (ant sized ) car
in the middle of commerce central.... I would have to wait until the
distributor (overheated- mounted too close to the engine) cooled enough
to restart it. It could take anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes. Hariy times
for a 20 year old..
Given this list, no doubt, it was a car of the year candidate, since it
was a champ except for that MINOR detail...
Monza....?
