Maybe someone else besides me doesn't think that "piston slap" in the ES350
is "Normal".

This is an industry-wide issue, but to john, the story is that people
are finally getting wise to the fact that Lexus makes terrible cars,
and all those reviews and consumer surveys have been filled with lies
all these years!
Also, isn't it strange that john loves to refer to Lexus as Toyota on
this newsgroup, but in this case he neglects to share the fact that
over the same period, Toyota is up 3.4%, bucking the industry trend.
I think Andrew Lang may have been referring to john when he said,

I think you're right, Graybeard!
It's too bad the ES, which is a nicely dolled-up Toyota Camry with
leather seats, has this type of poor piston-bore clearance production
line issues. Powertrain has not been Toyota's strength unfortunately.
See if BMW will give you sufficient trade-in value for your junk ES.
BTW, "The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) today reported
April vehicle sales of 31,448, an increase of 9.6 percent from the
28,692 vehicles sold in the same month of 2007." And I thought the the
Euro is strong against the US dollar.

No piston slap is never normal, except as you found in the contrary
from Lexus.
Poor metallurgy and long term wear is one reason; however, relaxed
production line tolerance is another (given other new ES on the lot
suffered the same).
I thought these days every manufacturer matches pistons to cylinder
bores to achieve the necessary tolerance. Well maybe not Toyota (which
makes Lexus line).
Piston slaps: "essentially, the piston moves sideways and "slaps" or
"knocks" hard against the cylinder bore and causes damage to the
engine pistons and cylinders, excessive smoke emissions, excessive oil
consumption, carbon buildup on piston heads, decreased mileage, and a
loud and obnoxious "slapping" or "knocking" noise, all of which
diminishes vehicle resale value in the trade."

"BMW Group (BMW and MINI combined) US sales up 9.6 percent in April.
Year-to-date sales are down 4 percent."
You seem to have forgotten the second part of their sales report
statement, which is reported in every single place the April sales are
reported - except , of course, in alt.autos.lexus, where
Al - john - Zeera keeps the ignorant masses informed about the evils
of Lexus.
Were you aware of the year-to-date sales figures john, and just chose
to edit them out, or did you just read the first sentence and rush
over here drooling on your keyboard to tell us?
Don't worry, I'm sure this unfortunate quarter for BMW is an
aberration, and when you've finished educating usenet, people will
start buying them once again. >> Stay informed about: Toyota's Lexus April 08 car sales drop 22.1%, trucks down .. |

What does the exchange rate have to do with car sales? Unless you're
saying BMW raised their prices in April due to a strong euro and STILL
managed to increase sales, it's a non-factor.
Lexus YTD sales, while down from 2007, are at 89,865. BMW YTD 85,100
(not including Mini). >> Stay informed about: Toyota's Lexus April 08 car sales drop 22.1%, trucks down .. |
