The alternator warning light comes on intermittently on this new (06)
truck, stays on for a few seconds, or a few minutes, goes on & off
erratically like that for anywhere from a minute or two up to 10-20
minutes - then goes for long periods without coming on at all. Happens
at idle as well as freeway speeds. So far I haven't had a dead battery
or any other problems, because it doesn't seem to last long enough to
affect the charge or the engine. Sometimes if it's cruising at
freeway speed & the light is on, it will go off it I touch the
accelerator a little harder, so it does seem to be a charging problem,
rather than just a simple problem with the light.
This looks like one of those electrical things that's going to be hard
to find. I'm wondering what to look for.
Any ideas? >> Stay informed about: Tacoma Alternator Light comes on intermittently |

You are correct that it will probably be hard to find. Look for the Toyota
dealer where you bought the truck and let the pros fix it under warranty.
That problem could be anything from a bad voltage regulator, bad ground, a
short to the warning light, loose cable, loose belt, bad alternator.

I have an 05 Tacoma v6 with tow package. I had my light do the same thing and finally it stayed on all of the time. I had put a meter in the acc outlet so I could watch the voltage, and it always charged at the right voltage with or without a load. I pulled the alternator out and cleaned the brushes. when I inspected the wire harness I found that I had a broken wire. The wire is from the 4 pin 3 wire connector that plugs into the alternator. Pin #4 (white wire) is the wire that controls the light. The break was found where the wires entered the main wire harness mounted to the bracket that mounts to the alternator. The fit of the harness to the mount is very tight. The plastic shroud that raps around the three wires doesn't go all the way down and left the wire with a little tape next to the metal bracket which had rubbed it's self thru and broke the wire. I soldered the wire and added some heat shrink. Then I put the plastic shroud back on but pushed it all the way down so that the bracket was hitting that and not the wires. No more light, No more problems. Hope this helps. >> Stay informed about: Tacoma Alternator Light comes on intermittently |
