!996, T100, V6 automatic. Starter sparatic ( like 2 out of 10 tries) drags
or just clicks but most times, after several tries it will start.
I had battery replaced and this cured problem for a while but then some
problem, took it to mechanic who tested started and could not
find anything wrong. Next it would not turn over at all until I put it on
the charger for a couple of hours now starts but old problem, drags
clicks etc. Sure I am going to get caught out in the boondocks some night
with a long walk. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Or, the connection at the battery. My son had the same problem with his
Jeep and we noticed corrosion where the positive wires went into the
connector. We cut off the wires, cleaned them after taking off some
insulation, and then went to WallyWorld and bought and installed a
connector. He hasn't had any problems since.

Sounds like the starter contacts are going. There are a lot of sites that
describe the repair including:
http://yotarepair.com/startercontacts.html
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/starter/
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml
Put a voltmeter in the lighter and watch the battery volts when it doesn't
start. If the starter clicks and the voltage doesn't go way down (less than
12 volts), then the starter isn't making electrical contact. The battery
voltage when the truck is not running should be between 12 and 13 volts.
When the starter pulls a lot of amps the voltage will drop and when the
truck is running the alternator should try to maintain the battery voltage
at 13 to 14 volts to charge the battery.

Before you remove the starter, clean ALL the battery cable connections
including the ground cable where it attaches to the battery and where it
attaches to the engine. Rust buildup will also keep the starter from fully
engaging.

Keep the group informed on what you find and good luck!!

Paul.
