Post subject: Subaru Liberty 1998 - Overheating

My 18 year old son has a 1998 Liberty RX 2.5 wagon that has been overheating. The thermostat has been replaced twice, but the car still randomly overheats. It can overheat whilst he is drinving the car at night in no trafiic (even at 1 am on his way out for the night!!) or on the way to the local shops! After then topping up the coolant it can then go for a week and have no problem at all.

When has overheatedm the coolant is lost, but there is no visible sign of it leaking anywhere.
The radiator feels cool - warm, and the fans are working okay, so I am not sure what to look at next or how to have it diagnosed without throwing money away for the sake of it.

The car has done 120k and serviced regularily.

Any help, advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

The head gaskets were known for going in the older 2.5's. Check the oil for a milkshake kind of color. Also pull a spark plug or two and check the color of them too. I hope this helps.

Dawg.
