Hi

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry XLE and it has developed a strange problem. A
few months back I noticed that the key only turns in one direction in
the doors to the car. On the drivers side the key turns clockwise which
unlocks the doors and on the passenger side it also only turns clockwise
which in this case locks the doors. It used to turn both directions.
When I mentioned this to the Service guy at Toyota he kind of blew me
off with how much a new key would cost. Is there anything I can do to
get the key to open and lock both doors? I know I can use the remote key
opener but would like the key to work as it used to.

Dave

The first thing to try is lubricating the lock cylinders with light
machine oil. NOT graphite, which can gum it up. You can use WD-40, but
if it works, add the light machine oil as well, because WD-40
evaporates. It's also pretty toxic...

What does it matter if it is toxic Nothing in the door is going to get
poisoned. Oil, in my experience attracts dirt and grunge.

I wouldn't want to drink or intentionally inhale the stuff, but the
ingredients listed in WD-40's MSDS seem less toxic than, oh, say
filling up with gasoline (which contains cancer-causing benzene, etc.)

http://www.wd40company.com/files/pdf/msds-wd494716385.pdf

On benzene in gasoline:

Best regards,

The toxic stuff evaporates quickly - you breath it in as you apply
it. It isn't going to send you to the ER, but it increases your risk of
cancer later in life.

Agreed on gasoline. I try not to work with raw gas, either. When
filling the car I keep my head out of any vapor plume. You folks may
laugh, but cancer will be affecting at least one in three of us by the
time we are middle aged. If I could run my car on light machine oil, I
would. Wink

I hear you. My sarcasm was due to, in my opinion, the over concern these
days for things supposedly toxic.
Seems we went from one extreme to the other.

Ever had barbecue? You're gonna die!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzopyrene
"Benzo[a]pyrene is found in coal tar, in automobile exhaust fumes
(especially from diesel engines), tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke,
incense smoke, wood smoke, and in charbroiled food. Recent studies
have revealed that levels of benzo[a]pyrene in burnt toast are
significantly higher than once thought, although it is unproven
whether burnt toast is itself carcinogenic."

Ever eaten peanuts? You're gonna die!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aflatoxin
"Virtually all sources of commercial peanut butter contain minute
quantities of aflatoxin, but it is usually far below the US Food and
Drug Administration's (FDA) recommended safe level."

Ok, I'll stop now... <grin>

I have a small can of aerosol "graphited lock fluid" that has lasted
for decades.
Light oil carrier with graphite powder and a thin plastic curved
nozzle to spray into the lock.
Seems to work well for me in all types of lock cylinders. Whenever I
notice less than smooth action in the pins, I spray some as
preventative measure.
