I have a rebuilt Studebaker Power Steering Unit in my 64 Daytona
Convertible. it has a drift that is uncomfortable. It was originally
built with manual steering and I have had the quicker steering
installed. The steering box has been adjusted but it still feels very
tight. There is no return at low speed and you can feel it bind for a
split second. I was wondering if this could be the problem as you tend
to over correct when you steer.

What is the proper method of adjusting the Steering Box in my
convertible.

I tried to post this before but it didn't show up.

I had that problem with my Hawk, after I replaced the horn wire. You have to
make sure that the steering
colum is actually straight from the box into the cabin. If it is slightly
off center you will feel a bind, or lack of
control, and the wheel will not return.

I don't have my shop manual in the house right now but, the procedure
is very well explained in it. you will need to pull the horn button
and have an inch-pound torque wrench on hand to properly set the
adjustment.

....and I'll throw out an odd but similar complaint that I found in my
64' raggie a few weeks ago. My steering wheel would "bump" whenever I
began a left hand turn...It would act similarly when returning to
center, but less pronounced. I fiddled with the steering box per
manual to no avail. I removed the steering wheel, horn button &
contact plate to find my horn bar (the small bronze plate under the
steering wheel to be worn so thin that it had a sharp gouge that the
horn contact button would get hung up on when turning left only....Over
the years I've done mostly highway driving and I guess with the crown
in the road I was mostly correcting the right sided drift....On a
similar note, I had my kingpins rebuilt several years ago...same type
problem....Worn pin area depicting highway driving mostly...
