Here's the end of the story...I picked up the 're-rebuilt' starter
this afternoon and it works great. Even though the rebuild shop was
highly recommended by everyone I talked to including the Toyota part
dept I guess everyone has a bad day from time to time. I had used
this shop one other time and the job they did was excellent and it was
a good thing since the starter was off a T100. If I had to take that
baby off and back on 5 times I most likely would have made a stop at
the local gun shop on the last trip to rebuild shop.
One tidbit I learned today was the proper way to bench test a
starter. Fixture the starter in a vice, boost it off and press a
block of wood against the gear,,,it should be very difficult to
impossible to stop the turning shaft. And also with no juice applied
the starter should turn by hand easily one way but not the other. The
1st rebuilt starter turn both direction with no difference in
resistance.
Thanks to everyone for their ideas and suggestions, its good to have a
place to ask questions and get answers
Yes I know the importance of clean shiny bright battery and cable
connections and I guess I ommited some info on the original post but
The first thing I did was to clean all the connections and then I
tried jumping the car off. and still all I got was a click. And if
you read carefully the 1st post you will see that with the newly
rebuilt starter the 'click' went to a starter turning but the engine
not turning. Im my mind this pretty much eliminated all but the
starter.
