Post subject: Starter Question Add to elertz

I recently installed a new starter in my 1990 Honda Civic. Now when I turn the key to crank the engine, unless I am very gentle and quick with the key, there comes a grinding sound from the starter the same noise you get when you mistakenly turn the ignition key when your car is already running. The car starts, but that noise cant be good. Any ideas whats causing it?

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Your problem sounds like misalignment... were there any shims on the
old starter?

I don't think there were any shims on the old starter, unless they were thin and stuck to the engine without my noticing. Someone also suggested it might be loose bolts (but they seem tight to me) or maybe problems with the rebuilt starter itself (it's a Federated). I should probably remove the thing, check for shims, make sure bolts are tight. Are there any special alignment tricks I should be aware of? And might it be a faulty ignition switch, not disengaging the starter motor immediately after the engine starts?
