1990 Toyota Celica. My son just replaced the radiator 3 weeks ago. It
was overheating and stalling. There is a slow oil leak showing on the
passenger side under the engine. The car has basically been running
pretty well until yesterday. The radiator coolant for some reason was
gone and the car stalled. He filled with water till I got home with
coolant (we live in Florida with cooler weather these days). Driving
home from school today he noticed there is a white smoke coming from
the dipstick area. Does this sound like the thermostat isn't working?
water pump? engine has an oil leak/pistons? I'm clueless. Can anyone
help us try to figure out the puzzle?

We had the same problem it was the water pump and it had to be replace
it cost about 350 because where the water pump is place. We try fixing
the water pump ourself but you will need tools take off the brake disc
to stop the rotation. If you buy the part at Autozone or Kragen it
going about 50.00 or less, it the labor that cost the most and it takes
about 4 hour or more to do the job. We call around an ask for different
prices but we had a friend who own a mech shop so it was cheaper. Check
next to the fan belt and see if the water leaking, if it is then the
water pump is wore out or broken.

THANK YOU!! Thank you so much for the suggestion. I guess it's
probably standard to change the water pump at the same time as the
radiator? Its so confusing when you know nothing about cars. I will
definetly have him check the and see if the water is leaking. Also, is
there a way to tell if the radiator fan needs to be replaced? he drove
the car around for about 10 minutes last night and the radiator fan
never kicked on. Maybe the thermostat should be replaced also? The
thermostat is minimal cost ($10 for the part) so we might just replace
this anyway... but the radiator fan is more expensive and I would hate
to spend the extra on to fix something that "ain't broke".

I don't remember why we were told the head was fine. He said he checks
his coolant and oil every day and it was fine until the other day
again. All of a sudden it was all gone again. It's weird, it will be
there for a month and then a disappear.

"If it gets worse, I'll pull it apart." where do you live? and how
much will it cost?
