Saab 9000 S (1989) Ignition circuit relay problem

My 1989 (non-turbo) 16v. 9000 has a problem when switching on the ignition.

The instrument back-lights illuminate but NOT the usual cluster of warning lights or the computer panel. The starter motor engages and turns over the engine, but the ignition circuit is dead, coil isn't energised and of course the car wont start.

Then If you leave it in the "Ignition on" position, after a while (2 seconds - 5 minutes) there is a "relay click" from behind the fusebox/glovebox area and it is back to normal, warning lights on and starts/runs perfectly - until the next time.

Itt has never reverted to that inoperative mode whilst running - only when first turning on the ignition. Hot or cold seems to make little difference although slightly more likely when hot.

Has anyone an idea of what this is or whether there is a relay somewhere behind the glove box and how to accesss it? Please post or PM me.
