Ford isn't quite putting all of its eggs in one basket with the Fusion, but it sure is coming close. The midsize sedan that the automaker hopes will keep it afloat in the long-term offers an unprecedented choice of four powertrain options - a huge range of available engines for a volume model. The most [...]

Ford is not putting all of its eggs in one basket. It is also coming
out with a new Taurus next year, as well as a new small car in the US
market. It just came out with a new Focus in the 2008 model (great car
- I have one) as well as a new F-Series model line-up. Ford is also
heavily invested in the Europe and developing countries (the so-called
BRIC countires - Brasil, Russia, India and China) as well as others.
In fact, more cares are sold in BRIC countries (combined) than in the
US market.

The old Ford Taurus had at least three engine models - Vulcan and
Duratec 3.0 litre V6s as well as a high-out engine. Similarly, the
old Contour has a 4-cyl, V6 2.5 l and a high-output V6.

Furthermore, the British Ford Focus has several diesel and petrol
engines available, plus several transmissions available. So Ford is
used to having several engine/transmission combinations.
