Have Just replaced the head gasket on my 86 magna also, And i have exactly the same problem as you. my Gregory's Manual doesnt say anything about it, and a friend of mine who is a retired diesel mechanic was stumped aswell.. I just got off the phone with a mechanic, he says that my Magna has a tensioner, but that it has no ratchet system to hold it out. So im thinking its come all the way out or something and needs to be somehow jiggled back in.
