Recurring Check Engine Light on Intrepid?

1997 Intrepid w/ 3.5L

What makes the check engine light come on in the first place.

I head that if it comes on its not critical but if it blinks then it is.
Is this true?

That lite could be turned on by a number of things, find out what fault code
is set, and yes if it is blinking it means cylinder(s) misfire, damage to
the converter.
