Our 2004 V70 had a wierd noise coming from the LR wheel. Upon closer exam found the bearing "growling." The wagon only has 64,000 miles and when brought to the local shop, was told in the past month, this two bay garage has replaced over four rear wheel bearings on Volvo AWD cars and wagons - all in the '01 to '07 model years; all with 40 to 90K miles.
The offending OEM bearing maker seems to be the maker of all the problem bearings, made in Italy. The brand? SKF.
This is obviously a manufacturing defect. Any time a wheel bearing goes bad in well under 100K, I suspect NHSTA may get involved. Is there any recourse anyone is aware of? A recall seems to be an obvious move. I'm not holding my breath however...
