Well I believe I have a bad rear main seal. Car is a 1996 Legacy Outback with the 2.2L engine. Oil is dripping onto the exhaust, so every time I come to a stop I smell burning oil. Does anyone have an idea on an estimate for this job? It is too big for me to tackle in the garage. Thanks for th..
« Hmmm, conventional wisdom seems to be that rear main seals are very rugged - though soobs have plenty of places they are known to leak from. Maybe clean off the engine/undercarriage at the car was.. »

I've got a rear main seal leak on my 67 FE Mustang. My understanding is I have to drop the oil pan which will entail jacking the engine up about an 1 1/4" and crankling the engine to clear the crank journal. Then I have to loosen all the crank bolts to drop the crank 1/32" to remove the upper part..

'96 non turbo 5 cy glx 850glt with 130k...highly maintained..developed a rear main seal leak...took to mechanic...returned dry...about 300 miles started leaking again...returned to mechanic...same deal....3rd time...just back last night...appears to have oil on case spit location on bottom of engi..

« Sounds like you need a new mechanic. There are anerobic sealers to put on the parting lines, after you clean them up, then re-install the rear seal retainer. I hope this helps. »
