1998 Explorer with rear disk brakes. I didn't realize that the rear brake pads are not identical. One end of each pad has a notch, otherwise they appear identical. Does the notch ride on the upper or lower rail? Or does it even matter? No reference in the factory manual and pads are not identified..
« Offhand I don't remember about the rears, but I definately know the fronts are the same. I think those notches are generic, so the pad will work no matter which side you use them on. »

My 2004 Honda Element rear brakes require service every year to lub the rear disk brakes. The calipers start to stick and wear out the rotors. Any advice how I could service the disk brakes myself? Any suggestons about a good service book for disk brake service? Thanks in advance, Brian

Generally speaking, how long should the rear brake pads last? I am fully aware that it depends on driver etc, but am curious. I changed the front pads at 18K, car now has 21000. I also have an 03, rear brakes are still going strong at 35K. I know in the old days of drum brakes, I've had cars go ov..
« I've seen them run 20K to 90K. The variance is just too great to put some sort of general expectation on them. As long as the parking brake is not overtightened and is working properly, they'll pr.. »
« In most cases, the rear brakes will outlast by 2x to 4x the front brakes. One exception was my 91 Regal that ate up rear brakes. It was the first year they had disks on the rear and it did not se.. »

Just to update and thank all those that responded and helped. OK, last night I changed the rear pads. I took it for a quick test drive. No question it is better. I would say that it is close to where it was when new. The pedal is still lower than I think it should be, but it has always been that w..
« I cannot think of a logical explanation for why replacing the pads would change the pedal height. I'm not disputing your finding; I just cannot think of a reason why it should be so. »
« Very strange I admit. Especially considering the fact that the pads really weren't all that worn. I still think it is too low, but it is not spongy at all anymore and at least a little higher. Weird. »
« Exactly. Brake systems are supposed to be self adjusting. There should be NO difference in brake pedal height between new pads and pads that are completely worn out, and that's exactly the way eve.. »
« I agree. That is why I was mad at the dealer...I brought it in for low pedal (to the floor) and their only answer (in writing I might add) was changing the rear pads. I checked the shop manual, chec.. »
