Hi, I don't have much knowledge of gas-electric cars...just wanted to
clarify a couple questions.
1. Is it true that battery pack in Prius needs to be replaced after 3-4
years of usage and that it costs >$5K to replace it?
2. Prius being a more sophisticated car then let's say Camry - is it more
expensive to maintain...I mean cost of scheduled maintenance and repairs?

My neighbor has one and its constantly in the shop. Latest issues, is when
he stops, something kicks in that makes it feel like he is getting rear
ended. The first time it happened, even I thought someone tapped us from the
back. He drives between Oshkosh and Chicago 2 times a week, and averages 43
MPG, he already put on 30,000 miles on it (1 year old) but it is in the shop
once a month for various, semi serious, items. It never died on him, or
stalled. He said even with all the issues, he would still buy one again. |

Thanks for your reply.
This was main concern about getting a gas-electric car.
I see priuses on the road all the time...they are pretty snappy.
I even saw at least one driving at ~5-6000 feet elevation while it was
snowing pretty heavily.

Also look at the Honda Civic. Gas mileage is not as good as the Prius but
it is more like a normal car power and driving wise. My wife bought a Honda
Accord Hybrid. I would not recommend the Accord for saving a lot on gas
but she did not want to give up all the luxury features she was used to.
The Prius is best for saving the most gas. The Civic is a darn good
compromise if you like normal cars more.

Probably a typical Toyota dealer that doesn't know which end of the wrench
to use. My wife's boss had 2 Prius's. 1st and 2nd generation and loved
them both. He never mentioned any problems.

Prius battery? - I'm curious about the Prius battery. It's not a lead-acid type is it? Otherwise it wouldn't last as long as it does? What kind do they use? Lithium Ion or something?
Prius maintance - What kind of dealer maintance is required, in order to keep the vehicle in warranty, and will the maintance cost eat up what you save at the pump with the 48mpg (city) claimed by the manufacture. Thanks Tom |
