Post subject: Power steering issues.

I recently replaced my radiator and alternator in my honda, which required the main tube detachment from my power steering pump. I bled the whole thing, so we were sure to eliminate all air gaps and such. I reconnected the tube from the power steering fluid resevoir to the pump and refilled the resevoir with too much fluid. For a while it didnt seem to work at all even when following the directions in my complete honda manual. All the power steering fluid leaks out within a few weeks. I didnt have this problem before i replaced the alternatior and unhooked the tube, so i must have screwed up somewhere. Even with powwer steering fluid in the resevoir, the steering wheell still turns much harder thanit normally used to. whats the deal. Any help out there would be saluted with my most graditude.

Normally you can bleed all the air out by turning the steering wheel stop to stop, that is all the way right then all the way left, several times and it should bleed the air. Are you sure you put everything back together correctly...hoses are in correct locations and are tight?
Could be that you need a new power steering pump.

Yo craig.
I allready did the steering wheel procedure, and it didnt work at all. I dont understand why i would need a new pump if it worked fine before i unplugged the hoses. Im going to go expiriment a little bit and see if i cant solve this issue. But more suggestions anyone? I appreciate the help man.

If it was working prior to taking it apart, then provided everything went back together correctly, and the air is bled out of the system it should work.
It's possible that maybe the air just isn't bleeding out, for whatever reason it might be getting trapped somewhere?
It's also possible that either it's just a coincidence that the pump went bad at the same time, or maybe the air in the system killed the pump - while I haven't heard of a honda pump being killed that way before I've heard of this happening to other cars.
Sorry I can't be of more help to you, just try everything you can think of to get the system bled. I'll look into getting the test procedure posted for you so you can determine 100% that the pump is still good or not.

Hi, thinking more about this I've come up with a little more for you...

Is the pump making any noises at all?
If it's NOT making a whining noise it should be GOOD...if it's got a whining sound to it that's a sign it's bad.

Also, are you getting ANY power steering out of it at all, or no? Does it feel like you're getting some assist but not the normal amount?
OR does it work sometimes and then not others? Kind of like an "on again off again" scenario? If that's the case, erratic operation would normally be caused by dirt in the system (or even just rust/sediment that builds up over time) and having that work it's way into the Spool Valve.
The spool valve can need to be cleaned (it's located on the steering rack where the steering column connects to the rack).

Have you been driving this car around, and if so has it gotten any better over time? If there was just some air trapped in the system somewhere it will normally work it's out over a short amount of time, say 2 or 3 days (depending on how far you drive it), so you could try just driving it for a little and see if maybe that's all that happened, and it could get better!?
