Ok, I've been wondering about the PTO hookups I have on
my 2500 QC and have always wondered....what can you do
with these? What can I run? And where do I find out what I'd
need and how much it'd cost?

In my head I'm designing a winch setup and found hydraulic
winches that run off the power steering pump but I don't want to
tap into that source. Is a hydraulic winch any better or stronger
than an electric? What benefits with hydraulic over electric...or
vice versa? What other items can I run off my PTO ports?

Hydraulic winches are typically more powerful, can run much longer, don't
have the potential to overheat, will never leave you stranded due to a
drained battery. The one big downside is, the engine's gotta be running to
use 'em.

Electric winches are usually easier to install, can be removable (using a
receiver, can be switched front to rear, or vehicle to vehicle), and can
operate even when the engine isn't (until the battery dies, anyway).
They're also usually cheaper than their hydraulic counterparts.

As for PTO accessories - I know there's a company out there that makes a
generator, complete with a panel you can install in your bed side that will
give you several 110 and 220 outlets.

There is no reason that a hydraulic winch can't be removable as well.
Many hydraulic suppliers will sell quick connect fittings (similar to
those used on snow plows) which can be mounted front and rear.

Only down side is that you'd need (perhaps) longer hoses on the winch
which could subject them to abuse.

But a down side to the PTO winch is that self extraction can be more
difficult.

Which is probably one of the more practical uses for the PTO! <BSEG>
(Just kidding, there are much better ways to do this generally, but a
PTO winch might be intersting...)

Looks like Warn is about the best selection of winches available
in both electric and hydraulic. They have a hydraulic winch with
a rated 20k lb capacity on first layer of spool. I think that one
would take care of any vehicle I'd have to pull out of a ditch when
it snows. Now to see about a pump that'll work well with it...or
one of the smaller winches.

Keep in mind that a winch shouldn't be rated for more than your tow
vehicle weighs if your pulling with the frame as an anchor. Unless you
want to buckle the frame.

Nah....I've got something else in mind as an anchor that won't
put that much strain on my frame. Also, I don't expect to be
trying to pull something that large out of a stick. But I would
rather have more winch that necessary for my given task.
