The manual says 5k, the dealer says 3.75k. Also, seeking recommendations for oil & filter. Thanks in advance! BC
« The dealer is only interested in seeing you more often. »
« Your dealer has your best interests in mind. Suggesting 3,750 mile intervals MEANS the majority of people actually show up just before 5,000 miles. It's really only the Do It Yourself oil change.. »
« WrongO Philip! I am on a 3000 mile sticker schedule and take both of our Rollas to the dealer for oil changes on time! -- Scott in Florida »
« Yeah. »

Given that synthetic oil lasts longer, is it necessary/advisable to use standard 5000-mile interval? -- Patrick Page Morongo Valley, CA 92256 760-363-0062
« What does your owner's manual say about synth oil? »
« IT doesn't. »
« When Mobil 1 first reached the market, we did the SOAP (Spectrographic Oil Analysis Program) on our racing engines, and synthetic definitely lasted longer according to the data. However, those eng.. »
« For warranty claims, you should stay with the US' standard maintenance interval. (I assume that you have a NHW20, which has a 6 month/5000 mile interval. The NHW11 (Classic) has a 6 month/7500 mil.. »

Lexus specifies the first oil change at 5000 miles. Is there an advantage to changing it at 3000 miles? Charles
« Yes, more money in the dealer's pocket. »
« No, there is no advantage to changing it at 3,000 miles. There are others who may tell you otherwise, but the folks who built your car are pretty knowledgeable about it so it is usually safe to f.. »
« Who in the hell goes to a Lexus dealer for an oil change? It's just a car, for God's sake. The $30 oil change at your local trusty neighborhood service station is just as good for your car as is .. »

2005 Sebring, 2.7L, 25K mi / yr, mostly highway @75 mph but some short stuff, too, so Schedule B seems to fit. Schedule B says oil change every 3K mi (about every 6 weeks), but the oil is still clean enough to read the dip stick markings. Seems a shame to change it this soon. Would going to a 5..
« I run synthetic, and follow *Schedule A*. Even then, the oil does not get completely black, even after that much mileage. I am out of warranty so I don't have to worry about that part. Whatever you .. »
« If an oil turns "black" it means that it is doing its job of holding contaminates in suspension. A non-detergent oil stays nice and clear a lot longer that a great detergent synthetic oil. Richard. »

All, I'd like to change the oil to my Camry and 4Runner every 3000 miles. However, I think the user's manual and dealers recommend to do it every 5000 miles. I'd like to get some comments from you guys in this forum about how often it is done. Thanks much. -Joe.
« Judging by past threads -- most agree 5,000 miles is fine and anything less is just contributing to the oil companies profit margins. I usually do 3,000 because it's what the dealer says to do. I k.. »
« I change oil in my two Toyotas approximately every 5-6 K miles. I use no oil in either car, and it seems to stay clean on the dipstick, so when it takes on a brownish tinge indicating that it's .. »
« I change at 5k miles when my MAINT REQD lights up. This is on a 5-7 month interval depending on my trips. I have never gone more than 8-9 months with the same oil. »
« Apparently, you know often it is done. However, it should be done every 5000 mi. As others have said, the oils today are good for at least 5000 mi. Any more frequent than this, and you're wasting .. »
