Just learnt from happy Canon users that the 5D is available in reasonable
quantities. In Palo Alto, I can even rent one for $200 a day (with a fast
zoom lens). But I think, it's not a good investment to rent a 5D until Nikon
comes out with something competitive Wink

So, where is my D70 upgrade? - Ah yes, Nikon might soon lower the price for
their almost outdated D2X.....just kidding.

Any new rumors about the D200? I am still waiting.

Gregor

Gregor,
Why this wish for a Nikon upgrade? Aren't you happy with your D70?
I came to North America in 1946. At the time, you lived with what you had
for quite a while even though it wasn't "state of the art". I'm not saying
that there is no room for improvement. However, I think this constant wish
to uprade is becoming a very infortunate way of life. One can't buy anything
for any short period of time without something "New" or something "Better"
being proposed. I remember the day I bought my Canon G1. Very soon after,
they were coming out with the G2. Had I swallowed the hook, I was going the
way of the G3, G4, G5 and G6.... When my G1 had a problem, I bought the
Rebel XT. I expect to keep it quite a while. I'm now experimenting with it,
having fun and my photos are getting better. At the same time, I'm learning
more about Photoshop...
I'm not "preaching" at you, at least, it's not my intent. I simply voice
what I feel about this constant "upgrading" and the "need" it awakens in
people.
To tell you the truth, right now, I wouldn't be taking better photos with
ANY camera because the problem lies with me, not what I'm using. After all,
the XT IS a good camera. So is the D70.
Cheers,
Marcel

In the case of (Nikon) DSLRs, the impetus to upgrade is that the
current models just aren't good enought. In my case, I use a borrowed
D70 but don't own one, despite my large collection of Nikkor lenses.
The D70 viewfinder isn't good enough, nor is the camera as sturdy as my
old N90s. the D100 is too slow, and for the price the D2x is just too
high for a camera with an undersized sensor.

The line SO needs a D100 with the updated, faster D70 circuitry; and a
Nikon rep informally told me to expect something like that this fall.
If they said that to me, they have to have said it to others - hence
the "D200" speculation.

Just rumours: mostly some juvenile Nikon fans jerking off with Photoshop to
"make" something to compete with the 5D. And as i've said before, I think
that calling the camera a D200 would just ignore Nikon's naming convention
altogether. A D90 or D80, or a D100S, wouldn't surprise me... but by then
Canon will have a 50D, a 5D Mk II and a 1Ds Mk IIN Very Happy

You didn't realize that the D70 has mirrors instead of a pentaprism?
Mirrors are cheaper, lighter, but dimmer than pentaprisms. I bought the D70
in full realization that it has mirrors.
As for durability, mine has certainly passed the impact with the ground
test. I suspect that my N90s would as well even though it shares some of
its body design with prior cameras such as the N8008 which cracked around
the prism housing. At least, my old N8008 did, and it never hit the ground.

Yes.
I think we should all aspire to technical stagnation, dang it!
Smile
A agree about the tendency some have to always upgrade.
For me, I only upgrade when a piece of equipment offers something critical
that was missing.
While all new cameras tend to have *something* new to offer, only a few
cameras offer something critically imporant.

I would be taking better landscapes with a full frame sensor. That or a
10-22mm lens, or both.

Is stitching not working?
the reason I ask, is because we have to use what we have (unless we
arer aboe to get better, I suppose). So, workarounds become important.
Is stitching not working as a workaround?

You're right about the lens. However, I'm not so sure about the full frame
sensor. Why would it make a difference?

I've been taking notice of that list for many MONTHS now, and I have NEVER
seen Canon with less than 6 of the 10 spots, and...I've never seen Nikon
with more than 2...usually only 1.
This doesn't bode well for a competitive environment.

I've always heard that the tendency you are referring to is an American
phenomena.
(I think more of the world has become that way, too, now.) It seems like
here in
the US, people prefer features over quality, quantity over longevity, etc.
I've heard
that Europeans tend to buy far fewer things, but save up for them longer in
order to
buy higher quality and tend to keep them for very long times. Of course,
now the
rest of the world seems to be on the same bandwagon...the height of
stupidity (IMHO)
is the Internet-enabled refrigerator that tracks its inventory via barcode
scanning
and takes the liberty of ordering food via its Internet connection...sorry,
but I'd want
to see and CHOOSE what is in my fridge!

When you buy something there, how much do you/can you bargain on
price. Few weeks ago, I was looking for a Nikon accessory when this
guy standing next to me gets a demo of the D2X. Next thing I hear,
is, "I'll take it." Guy whips out the old credit card, and pays five
grand (plus the 8.25% vigorish to the state). Sheesh. Didn't even
try to bargain down the price.

Maybe he works for Google. Smile

Not a rumor, but if you calm down and think a bit, it's clear that the
sensor in the D2x can be made a heck of a lot more cheaply than the Canon
5D's sensor, so if you wait a bit, Nikon will, most likely, come out with a
12MP APS-C camera in the US$1500 to 2000 range. (I'm guessing that they'll
charge a bit of a premium over the 20D/D70 class cameras for the first 12MP
camera in that class.) Wait a bit longer, and there's no reason you couldn't
have a 12MP D50 for US$799.95.

Since tiny pixels can make very nice high-contrast/high-saturation eye candy
(if you can provide enough light), as many E-300 and other P&S camera users
can tell you, it's not completely ridiculous for folks who don't need shadow
detail and don't mind not being able to do low-light work.

I am not looking for a D50 with a 12MP DX format image sensor. I am looking
for a DSLR that is built reasonably well (e.g. like the D100), sells for
less then $3000, has MLU and a flash sync of 1/500 (or faster) using
i-TTL. - Well, I am most likely not getting this one from Nikon. - Ah, and
larger pixels would be fine, too. But how is Nikon making the pixels larger
when being constraint to the DX format image sensor? ;-(

Somehow, Nikon's DSLR roadmap looks more and more like an evolutionary dead
end. I think that all Nikon customers that want to see competitive products
from this company should let it be known. Canon is leading the way, and I
expect Nikon to start showing progress. I cannot imagine that I am the only
one who is rather displeased with this company's lack of vision. Switching
to Canon will cost me a huge bundle. (Does Canon entertain a trade-in policy
for Nikon gears?) - Anyway, I am still frequently using my F3 with the same
lenses I use on the D70. If I did not dislike the tiny CMOS sensor on the
D2X so much, I would have probably purchased one. But the darn small pixels
and the slow flash sync do not excite me when having to pay close to $5k for
the body alone. That's called ripoff.
