| Hi, I have a 2005 430, my sister's new Acura's NAV system is FAR
SUPERIOR to mine. What exactly do you get when you buy the upgrade?
And where do you get it and for how much? I have to drive 2 hours to
the nearest Lexus dealer. Thanks!

She can put in the address of, say, a hospital in another city and get
directions. When I start putting an address it the system throws up
the possibles before I finish typing in. And won't let me add a
"Cove" or "Way" or "NW", I can't override it to allow further typing.
Also she gets a text only list of directions onscreen to read to make
sure the route she is choosing is the exact one she wants.

Those are excellent features- I agree with you it would be great if Lexus
had them. The nav system definitely could use some improvement.

All of the currently available navigation systems could use improvement, I
don't care who the manufacturer is.

BMW's is particularly bad. Lexus is ok, but still far from good. I haven't
tried Acura's yet. I've only sat as a passenger in the Cadillacs, but their
Nav system seems somewhere between BMW's and Lexus's in ease of use.

The GM cars I tried had a nav system with CDs - it disabled the CD palyer
and you need to replace CDs when you move into a different region. It was
a 2006 Buick.

It is not an *upgrade*, it is an *update* to the map data. You can buy
it only from a Lexus dealer, and the disc retails for around $250.00.
The newest version is coming out in November, however, there is no
guarantee there will be an update to your particular area. Check with
the dealer for a list of updated areas when the disc comes out.

The "system throws up the possibles" before you finish typing based on
what's in the map data; that's better than having all the letters
available for streets that don't exist in the database, don't you
think? It won't allow you to add "cove" or "way" or "nw" if none of
those exist for the address; it will if the "cove" or "way" exists in
the map database. Are you using the space key after the street name to
add "way" at the end?
>Also she gets a text only list of directions onscreen to read to make

If she has to use the nav system, how would she know the route is one
she wants?
Look for the "turn list" button onscreen; I think it's at the top of
the screen before you press "guide". Or, once you start the guidance,
press the "route preview" button on-screen. There is a "turn list"
button there somewhere... >> Stay informed about: Navigation system upgrade |

My perception is that Honda used Garmin's software, and Toyota (Lexus)
used some other company unused to navigation. Our 2006 Lexus RX 330
NAV was so bad I had to quit using it. We were traveling across
country from East to West this Spring. Periodically the GPS would say
"take the next exit and make an immediate right turn". This was utter
nonsense, and we had to put up with it across this great country of
ours. I can provide numerous other examples of the worthlessness of
Lexus (Toyota) GPS comparing it to my 2006 Honda Accord which is spot
on!! Our dealer was very supportive of the faults of the Lexus GPS,
and gave us a free XM radio install to assuage our disgust!
My next SUV will be an Acura MDX just for the accuracy of the GPS!!! >> Stay informed about: Navigation system upgrade |

If your Nav system was telling you to take the next exit, you've
turned off the "allow freeway" or "allow toll road" settings, and the
Nav system will try to route you on city streets only. You can easily
tell if you've done this by looking at the "route overview". >> Stay informed about: Navigation system upgrade |

That's funny! Been there, done that!
Hey, maybe I can get a free XM radio out of my Lexus dealer with that
one. Thanks for the suggestion! >> Stay informed about: Navigation system upgrade |

Gee I just got my 350. I hope things got fixed? On the other hand the
free xm would be nice, but I would still have a good functioning nav
system. When they put in your xm, did they need to install a seperate
antenna?

Jules, don't worry, there's nothing to fix with the Nav system except
lack of knowlege on how to work it properly.
