Post subject: Mystery of the dysfunctional brake lights

Here is the forensic evidence:

when I hit the brake pedal, only the middle brake light (of the three) comes on.

when I put my turn signals on or hazard lights (which use the same bulbs), the lights work fine.

There are only two wires coming out of the brake pedal, suggesting that there's only one circuit for all the brake lights.

Any suggestions
