Post subject: MoPar cop car wheels?
Archived from groups: rec>autos>rod-n-custom (more info?)

Hi,

just bought a set of wheels and tires that were mounted on a Studebaker

street rod, to use on my '55 Stude coupe. The rears appear to be MoPar

police car wheels, about 7-3/4" wide (I assume a nominal 15"x8") and
the
fronts appear to be Ford 15"x6"

my question is this, I thought cop car wheels were 15x7 or were there
different sizes? If there were 15x7 made, what years were they used
and
what is the offset? I am hoping for a 15x7 with about a 1" or a little

more offset as that seems to be the absolute largest wheel I can stuff
under the front of my car. Even better would be if they match the
rears
so I could use "dog dish" hubcaps (I like the Stude full wheelcovers,
but those drum brakes need all the help they can get.)

I tried to google for this info but the web seems to be flooded with
press releases on the new cop cars...

thanks,

nate

If the wheels were 7-3/4" wide overall, then they were in fact 15x7's,
since the rim width is measured where the tire bead sits, not the
outside.

The 7-3/4" was an estimate of the bead-bead width, not overall... I've
been told that there were not 8" wide cop car wheels made which prompts
the question, what did I just buy?

it is possible you could've either bought some aftermarket rims that
basically got forgotten about or someone had paid to have the original
rims custom widened which was very popular to do at one time since there
was no one producing stock looking rims that was wider than stock in the
after market and for certain model cars there was nothing avaible so
they would send out the stock rims the company would do one of two thing
one they will cut the rim in half and weld in a center section to widen
it or the will cut out the center hub section and weld it into a new
outside rim at the width and backspacing you specified ,there is one
company that comes to mind that still does this work their name is pete
paulsen ,that is the only things I could think that they did
