~83K miles. Starts great. After a few minutes, idle gets rough. Can't hear any vacuum leaks, no "check engine" lights on. Bought one of those plug in engine testers. That tells me the EGR may be malfunctioning. Questions...what exactly does the EGR do, route some exhaust back to the engine to..
« Sure it can.........but so can a bad plug wire or plug. There are a number of things that will cause a rough idle. »
« My 1983 grand marquis has had problems with the EGR valve; every once in a while a carbon deposit will build up inside it, and eventually gets big enough that it holds the valve open. What ended up.. »

I bought this car from its original owner for $500 with only 65,000 miles on it. Seems like it runs and drives pretty good, but it's getting horrible gas mileage. Seems like it's getting about 9-10 MPG. It also idles very high all the time. And sometimes when you start it up in the morning it s..
« The vacuum thing may be for the automatic parking brake release when you shift out of Park to Drive. The erratic idle & hard start could be from a dirty IAC valve. You say the engine on the '85 is E.. »
« Uh... It's INSIDE the car cabin? If it hisses all the time, it's leaking.. and that will cause high idle on an EFI. Good thing you thought to mention that. -- Yeh, I'm a Krusty old Geezer, puttin.. »
« The engine has TBI (Throtle Body Injection). From what others have told me, it was standard equiptment on these cars. -Tony »
« Good advice above. Also, if it's similar to GM's TBI, if the gasket under the TBI goes bad, it'll idle too high and suffer poor fuel mileage. A simple fix for this! s »

Where is this valve located and is it a reasonable/simple job to replace it yourself? George
« PCV valves are on the rocker cover. You will either be able to pull it out or unscrew it. I am unfamilliar with the car so I am not sure which it will be. Try pulling it off and blowing carby cleane.. »

Has any one driven the new 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis and can report how the car steers? Previous years of this car has had a steering reputation of wanting to drift. I have read that the components of the steering unit have been replaced with an improvement. I have not had the chance to test dr..
« i imagine the 2003 isn't too much different than the 2004 i had a 2000 and was very satisfied, the 2003 changed to RACK AND PINION so i'll have to wait. the hub caps are noisier and the rims have be.. »
« I rent Grand Marquis when traveling and the 2003 & 2004 are an improvment over the prior units - no more drifting on the highway with a moments inattention to the helm. »
http://Toyota.autoboardz.com/Mercury-Grand-Marquis-96-CoolDex-ftopict226373.html (Mercury Grand Marquis 96 - CoolDex?)
I just bought a Grand Marquis 96. Was this car delivered from the factory with CoolDex or normal cooling fluid? I am thinking about flushing the system but since it only has 50k miles on it maybe that is not a good idea if it is filled with CoolDex..?
« I don't know nuthin' about what type of coolant but can recommend that you check the intake manifold as they crack near the thermostat and let the coolant leak out. See for some more details. .. »
« There is no visible leak on the manifold. Should I replace it anyway? How much does it normally cost to have it replaced or is it easy to do myself? Oh, and I messed up the name of the coolant in my.. »

The original flasher (Wagner 325) was loud enough but the click rate had slowed way down. I bought a replacement Tridon but you could hardly hear it. Then I tried the Tridon LF-12 Loud Flasher. It was about as loud as the original Wagner but because of it's greater height, you could not put the..
« Wagner probably still makes a flasher for the car. Perhaps they use a different number. You can try your local auto store. Have you tried the dealer? Jeff »

Yeah it's an old car, so of course if there are transmissions issues that shouldn't be a surprise due to its age. Anyway. It has about 150,000 miles on it, the behavior I've noticed is this. It has just started "roaring" when it shifts into overdrive. Also, it's reluctant to downshift at lower s..

My mother's 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis LS automatic won't shift into gear. She says that she has to pump the breaks dozens of times before it will shift out of park.
