Post subject: Japans Toyota Motors reaches yet another milestone
Archived from groups: alt>autos>toyota (more info?)

Toyota Motors has been operating in the US since 1957 and has reached many
milestones for the automotive industry, including becoming the number two
seller in the US in 2009, before dropping back to third place in 2010.

In 2010 Toyota reached another milestone. In 2010 Toyota has issued the
most recalls for a single auto manufacture, year to date, in any one year.
In 2010 the number of Toyotas recalls has been greater than the COMBINED
number of recalls for ALL of the other vehicle manufactures. That is the
first time that has ever happened since the NHTSA was established, requiring
vehicle manufactures to recall and repair defective vehicles.

The total number of Toyota vehicles recalled, and the wide variety of the
recalls, has adversely effected Toyota quality perception among buyers and
resulted in highest number of class action litigation ever, for any vehicle
manufacture, as well.

Toyotas latest recall involves stalling problems with its Corolla models.

But, you said Japan's Toyota Motors. Most of the cars covered by recalls
were made in North America.

I think North American manufacturing is the source of most of Toyota's
troubles, and should be shuttered immediately.

I wonder how many other manufacturers will be honest enough to own up to
stalling because of a faulty module and do a recall?

They did recalls only because they were forced to.

Toyota did not "OWN UP" it was complaints from owners to the NHTSA, dummy.

Seems to me you should be wondering what the hell is going on with Toyota.
More recalls, in less than one year, than all of the other manufactures
combined IS something to worry about if you are going to buy a new car
today.

Last year GM had the most recalls (17); Toyota had the most recalled
vehicles (4.9 million). Overall, 15.2 million vehicles were recalled.

That about the same number of vehicles sold in an average year (last
year 10.6 million vehicles were sold; from 1994 to 2007 about 16 million
vehicles were sold per year).

If there is a defect rate of 2%, that means that 2% of 16,000,000
vehicles should have been recalled or about 320,000. Wow! This is 50
times higher than Mike's 2% defect rate. I wonder what is happening.

I forget my sources: For the number of vehicle solds, I went to wards
(http://wardsauto.com/keydata/historical/UsaSa01summary/). and the
article that talked about the recalls is here:

Sorry about that.

As it's only American cars that are at fault, it's reasonable to assume
the module in question is made in America, and would therefore be used
on other makes of car. Further I don't recall, the recall being
mandated by the government department that oversees these things.

I would find it comforting, to know that Toyota puts consumers before
profits.

Actually, the first big recall was in conjuction with NHTSB. They were
forced to because of consumer pressure, too.

And the problems with the Prius were not because the Prius is made in
America. The Prius is not made in America.

You might also note that the recall includes many cars outside the US:

They don't. No car maker does.

You would need to ask Toyota why it had more recalls than all of the others
combined, I don't know why.

YA' right. When Toyota has a NHTSA ordered recall it is because it is
concerned about their customers, but when an other brand have a recall it is
because they make junk. What color is the sky in YOUR world? LOL

But they didn't. Toyota had less than 5 million recalled vehicles, about
1/3 of the total number of vehicles recalled (16,000,000).

Further, GM had more recalls than Toyota, 17.

And you still haven't explained why the recall rate is 50 times higher
than the defect rate for all manufactured products that you claim is 2%.
