This is the first time I have been to this Board and I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes.
I purchased an inexpensive fuel gauge and sending unit from JC Whitney. Others have had good results with this kit. I am using it to monitor the fuel in a gas tank I installed for an 8000 watt electric generator I am using for emergency power for my home. My problem is that the gauge will not register any reading. JC Whitney sent me a replacement and I tried it but without any luck.
I am using a battery for a power source and wiring a closed circuit from the tank sending unit to the fuel gauge. The back of the fuel gauge is marked with an "S" for Sending Unit, a "-" for the ground and a "+" for the positive side of the battery. With everything connected I can measure 13.1 volts from the ground to Positive and 6.3 volts from the "S" side of the gauge to ground with a full tank of gas. It seems that all should be working correctly, just no reading is showing up on the gauge. If I reverse polarity, I get a reading but it doesn't seem correct and does not seem to change.
Does anyone have any idea of what I should check? Thanks in advance for any help you may have.
