The original Goodyear Integrity tires on my '01 Highlander are getting worn,
and I would like to replace them with a tougher SUV tire. I drive mostly on
the highway, but like to explore some rocky backcountry roads in the California
deserts: no serious offroading. Park Rangers advise that passenger tires get
frequent flats in this terrain, although I am OK so far.
What would be a good highway SUV tire which would also give me some more
protection in the desert?

Michelin Cross Terrain SUV's are pretty good for this vehicle.

I'll second that. I put a set on my '01 Highlander about 3 months ago and
I'm pleased so far. Previously I had good luck with a set of Michelin ATX
tires on an Explorer.

I have had a lot of success with Copper Tires on both my SUV and
Minivans over the past 5 years. They seem to be a nice tire and rated
well in the DOT ratings.

I put a set of Michelin Cross terrains on my 02 Highlander at 20k miles -
just didn't like the duelers

The X-terrains at costo were $600 - but ride like a dream and handle well in
downpours - might have sno next week near so will let you know

these are only Michelins I know of with 65k treadwearout warranty.

just got 6000 miles on them and rebalance/rotated per costco recommendations

put mxv-4plus on the Avalon (Dunlops were rags) by the way
