Post subject: Hessitation and stalling

I have a 1989 Honda Accord with 58,000 miles on it. Recently, I noticed when I would come up to a stop light after I came to a stop, the RPMs on the car would go way down and there would be a slight hesitation after I pushed the gas pedal (to go through the light). However, after the hesitation, it would pick back up and run like a dream.

I have taken it on long trips and change the oil religiously every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. It runs great other than this. It has died on my a couple of times when the RPMs bogged down like this, but it does not do it on a regular basis.

I know very little about cars. So, I thought I would see what you guys thought. Could it just need a tune up or does this sound like a serious mechanical problem? Thanks for your help.

Shane

Alright bro....I just got a 1990 Honda Prelude SI....they are very similar...so check this out. On my car it did that exact thing......I took it to a shop and I got ripped, so maybe I can help solve that problem b4 u even think about a shop. First off, my timing was off a little, so I had that done correctly, it stopped the stalling and the rpm bogging down to where it dies, but it still had the hesitation. I did a tune-up on it.....In a tune-up, they say that it requires new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, new cap AND router, air filter, and oil change. Well, I did all those but changing the distributer. Well, $750.00 later in the shop I found out that the distributer was damaged......it is supposed to spin in a complete circle. Mine was not, and that resulted in an odd flow of electricity to my sparkplugs which caused the car to hesitate in low rpms but ran fine when I got going. They fixed that and now it runs like "a dream" without the hesitation, no stalling nothing. Now dont get your hopes all the way up yet....bc hesitation can be caused by alot of things that can end up costing you alot of money in a shop. My car has 190638 miles on it....and it runs like a champ now. But the only real way to fixing this problem is starting somewhere and working your way around untill you find it. I ended up replacing my fuel pump, fuel filters, and tunning it up to figuring it all out. But thats where my problem was, and I'd be dambed if yours is not that same. So, check this stuff out b4 you take it to a mechanic. Oh, the first thing I would have checked ASAP if I were you is the timing, because you dont want to run around in that thing with the timing off because you can bend your valves and that my friend costs alot to fix. The timing is all that I would ever go to a shop for because they will do it right. so check that first. But you said you know little about cars, well try to fix these problems yourself and learn the best you can bc a shop will kill you money wise.
