I own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited, and I recently popped her into 4WD
to navigate through some muddy terrain. Unfortunately, when I got
back onto normal road, the 4WD gear shift would not allow me to shift
back into 2WD. I've tried everything the manual says. I even got so
mad that I used my foot to thrust the shifter forward in hopes of
forcing the shifter back into 2WD. However, nothing happens...the
light for 4-Wheel Part Time stays lit. I know it's not a light
malfunction, since the slipping of sharp turns continues, and the
"whistling" continues at higher speeds.

Please....anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks.

Sometimes you have to goose them in reverse spinning tires to unwind things.

There also is a linkage setup underneath that might be in bad need of a
grease job.

If it has manual locking hubs, try unlocking them, then try shifting the
transfer case.

Yes, he is likely experiancing a torque bind in driveline and until it
is released, he will not be able to remove it for 4WD. Worse case
senerio, he could jack up a front wheel and release the bind and
remove it from 4WD.
