I have a 1996 Lincoln Continental, and when you turn off the
ignition the fan keeps running. This just started today. Later,
when I restarted the car, and set the heat/ac to "auto-heat, the
fan came on. What could be the problem? I would appreciate it if
someone would point me in the right direction in solving this
problem.

I await your expert responses.

Thanks,
Tom

Maybe that fine Lincoln of yours is overheating. That's the first thing I would want to rule out or fix before serious damage is done.
If the engine is hot or becomes heat soaked enough when you shut it off, the fan ia supposed to come on. And if you turn on the AC, the fan is supposed to come on. If you have a dash gauge, that could be a guide, but not a very accurate one.
Check your gauge.
Check your coolant level.
Your radiator could be plugged.
Find a shop.

The fan runs when the engine temp sensor tells it to - ignition on or
off. Your heater system mixes hot/cold and it activated the AC. The
AC turns the fan on.

None of this 'just' started today. This is the way it's supposed to
work. You just now noticed.
