I'm researching a book on Harry Truman and would like to locate his
1953 Chrysler New Yorker (it's black with chrome wire wheels). I am
told it is owned by a collector, but I have not been able to locate
him (or her). (It's not at the Truman Library.)

Does anybody on this group happen to know where Harry's
'53 Chrysler might be? Or, can anyone offer any advice on how to find
it? Thank you!

I'd suggest contacting one of the large national MOPAR or Chrysler
clubs such as the WPC club http://www.chryslerclub.org/

The national club has an online forum to ask questions of Chrysler
aficionados and members. If the car is out there, someone in that club
will know about it.

Just start googling Mopar clubs and chrysler clubs.

The Henry Ford Museum in Detroit has several Presidential Limos. I don't
know if Truman's is there but you could check there also.

The '53 was Bess Truman's car, which Harry bought for her.

It might have been used as a trade-in on his '55.

Thanks for all the replies, everybody. To follow up:

1. Yes, Harry's '53 Chrysler was Hemi-powered. According to what I've
been told (and I know almost nothing about cars), it had a 331 cu. in.
V-8 "firepower" engine (later known as a "Hemi").

2. Good suggestion about posting something to the Chrysler Club's on-
line forum. I will do that right away.

3. Harry's Chrysler is not at the Truman Library (I just returned from
there). It's not at the Henry Ford Museum either. As I said, I've been
told it's in the hands of a private collector.

You guys might be interested to know that Harry Truman was seriously
dedicated to Dodge and Chrysler products. According to the Truman
Library, every vehicle he owned from a 1917 Dodge Model 30 to a 1972
Chrysler Newport royal was either a Dodge or Chrysler.

Thanks again for the replies.

The Dodge Brothers manufactiured most (if not all) of the major
mechanical componets for Ford Model T cars. They also manufactured some
major componets for the early Oldsmobile cars. There used to be brand
name of twine long ago by the name/brand name of Plymouth. The Plymouth
cars were named for/after that Plymouth brand name of twine.Plymouth,
Dodge DeSoto and Chrysler Chrysler Imperial invented and developed and
pioneered quite a few advanced things which most people take for granted
on their vehicles nowadays.
