I'm sorry I didn't find this site sooner but I'll tell you what I know. We
went to the races that sunday after Scott was killed. What goggle shows is a
very old picture. There is no sand pit at the end of the track. What they
have is a dirt shoulder that ends with the same kind of concrete barriers
you see on the highway. All the cars were using the last turnout lane at the
end. So you have asphalt until about 10feet of dirt then the concrete
barriers.
I saw Saturday night on ESPN the run. They showed it once. There's not even
a copy on the net anymore which I find good. Scott's car blew up right
before the finish line. It broke the body in half. He was on fire but
working the bottles. He pulled the chutes and only one came out and did not
deploy all the way. Towards the end he almost had the fire out when he hit
the concrete barrier head on. I would guess he was still going well over
200mph. The car just exploded and you saw nothing. NHRA shut the track down
and everyone left. They still had some super comp to run but held that until
Sunday. The pits and the track was real somber. They ran the first round of
top fuel then when the funny's came up Robert Hight came up and did a long
burn out. Then all 3 of Kalitta's teams (minus Connie and Doug) came up to
the line on the other side. The lights came down and Robert IDLED through
the ¼ mile. He did that for respect and he lost any chance at lane choice.
He lost the next round.
The day was very nice and great for racing but you could tell there was
sorrow in the area. Back at the pits next to his trailer the fans had
brought some flowers and items to show respect.
It's very obvious that Englishtown needs to be extended. I would guess that
those pictures by goggle were taken when the cars ran much slower. All the
racers were doing what Scott wanted them to do and some donated their wally
to the Kalitta family. RIP Scott. >> Stay informed about: Goggle has old picture |

The accident video has been pulled from YouTube due to copyright by
NHRA/ESPN. Copyright aside, I can sure understand them wanting to get that
video off of the netwaves.
Here's a link that still has that video.

If you say you were there and there is no sand, this video sure makes it
look like there was. When I freeze frame and stop the video at the end of
the track it sure looks like the car is hitting sand in front of the net.
But, if you were there and say there is no sand, well, you were there.

What I said was there's a dirt shoulder at the end. And it ran along the
concrete barriers and not there to slow anything.. At best it was 10 feet
wide. Surely not a sand trap. >> Stay informed about: Goggle has old picture |

From another thread http://tinyurl.com/6zl5wa looks like a sand trap
to me. According to the scale on the bottom, it appears to be about
100' L x 50' W. >> Stay informed about: Goggle has old picture |

There is a sand trap, the ESPN broadcast showed cars and bikes going
into it before the fatal run, they highlighted the fact it happens a bit
at that track, and even showed compilations from previous years, if it
aint sand that they were going into, and its alont longer than 10ft. >> Stay informed about: Goggle has old picture |
