Hi Guys.
Just reading the other thread and it reminded me of an old story that
perhaps a few of you may be able to confirm.
First some clarifiers, just for the record, and for people to see where I am
coming from.
I am an Aussie watching NHRA on ESPN. I have been to a couple of NHRA
meetings at the Strip in Las Vegas but most of it is watched on TV at home
on a Tuesday night here.
I love John Force. I think he is a great Ambassador for the sport.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gary Densham. He is an icon of the
sport as well, more so in Australia.
I am led to believe that Gary Densham was actually the guy who pulled John
Force out of the wilderness and kick started his FC career.
Gary Densham used to travel to Australia regularly during the NHRA off
season for the Australia Vs USA Drag race Challenge, which was held over the
Christmas / New Year period in Australia at 3 tracks in Sydney, Melbourne
and Surfers paradise. This was back in the late 70's and early 80's.
As I understand it one year he dragged an unknown US driver out with him, by
the name of John Force. Force's motor blew up in the first round of racing
and Force did not have the expertise, or money, to repair the motor. Gary
Densham came to the rescue and fixed everything so that the competition
could continue.
I am not sure what happened once the guys returned back to the USA but John
Force certainly started to emerge as a high profile driver after that.
Maybe the story has been distorted over the years, but that is the way that
I understand how things got started.
Can anyone else shed some more light on it?

Its an awesome story that's for sure!!
By the time I started to take a serious interest in drag racing in
Australia, the format had already changed to the USA Vs Australia series
where the US drivers raced against the Australian drivers for a mini points
series.
Now, all we need is for NHRA to follow in the footsteps of the Indy cars and
F1 and slate in an NHRA round in Australia.
now THAT would be awesome!!

I have wondered why Gary left the Force team. And for years Gary had AAA as
a sponsor then when he left they stayed with Force.

It seems like the time with Force was a reward for Gary. Force is
looking to the long term success of Force Racing- the time when he
retires. Gary is the same age (or older) than John and would not be a
help in that situation.
I have no idea on the AAA situation. I suppose JFR is looked on as a
better use of money than a lowbucks operation.

Driving Force on A&E - This of course is the reality show that features the life of John Force and his family (three daughters and his wife). It was about as bad as I figured it would be. Instead of the bleeped out F-word from American Chopper, we have the God part of GD.. |
