My 156 1.8TS is currently suffering from the same problem - just seems
to have started with the cold weather...

Had similar thoughts so I replaced the plugs and tried cleaning the
wire on the air flow meter. I've read that cleaning doesnt always work
though, so going to try fitting a new one shortly - work a chance as
available for < £40 on eBay. Will let you know if it solves the
problem.

Don't buy a cheap, pattern, AFM, they're all rubbish and cause more
problems than they solve.

The same would go for a second hand one - you'll have to stump up for an
OEM Bosch if you want to be sure you're solving the problem.

A diagnostic test will tell if it is the AirFlow Meter, the Lamda
Sensor, or another problem, another Tesco fuel issue??!!!
Complete waste of time and money buying a used or non OEM AFM

When Jamie Porter says 'it's the AFM' 9 times out of 10, then I tend to
listen.
