Archived from groups: rec>autos>makers>vw>watercooled (more info?)

I am located in Greece
I have 1992-3 Golf 1.4 litr engine and I had to replace the temperature
sensor/sender.
The old part is number 257919501A (with yellow collar)
Went to the dealer this morning and he told me that the part number was
changed to 6U0 919 5018 (with blue collar) by the manufacturer ELTH.
Both parts show the ELTH name on them.
I have a feeling the 6U0 919 5018 is for a 1.6 ltr engn.
How can I make sure? Can someone pls advise
Thanx in advance.

If they look the same and have the same temp range then they should be
fine. They do not have to have the exact same shape to work properly.
If it fits in the hole correctly and seals up and has the proper
electrical connection. In days of old some people woudl try a water
temp sensor in an oil temp location. They had different temp ranges so
the guage would not work properly. The water and oil temp sensors
looked the same except for the temp stamped on the sendor.

Both are exactly the same and both show the same voltage range 12V-240max.
My question is (was) why do they show a different part number?
Does a 1.6 ltr golf III uses the same sensor?
I tried to do a search in Google of the part nubs
but I get only topics in slavic (I think) languages.
The ELTH site does not give details.
But, from yr answer, for wich I thank you,
it should work fine.
BTW the car works fine again, while it wouldn't even start before.
And just FYI the cost of the part (at the dealer) was 31Euros (40.00 USD)
8-(((

Whether it is the coolant-temperature sensor or the oil-temp sensor is not
clear... In any case coolant-temp sensor on 1.8l engine is known to be of
blue color.
