Ford Focus 2004 new key made

Where should I began? There have been multiple problems with this car. I just need to get another year out of this car. Here is the latest:

My car key seems to be worn. It will only work in my ignition going in one way (you can see the #1 symbol on it when you put the key in the ignition). I have my registration and I'm assuming I need a key made from the vin number or information posted on the car. Am I right? Should I go to a delership or a locksmith? I have limited funds and am just trying to get this car to last another year. How much should this cost me?
