That's a very interesting idea. I wouldn't use such a facility, as I am
mechanically challenged, but even in my housing development, it is agianst
the rules to do any car maintenance on-site. I know there are neighbors who
would love such a facility. >> Stay informed about: Finally Had It with My Subaru Dealer |

They're sometimes called 'hobby garages' and I think they were common at
some military bases. I suspect for the general public there would be too
many theft/insurance issues. Sometimes you can see where some local guys
are having 'garage days' or the like being organized in the regional
forums over at www.nasioc.com . Usually more for mods or tuning than
repair, but you may still find someone willing to meet with you and
assist for a few beers. I dunno - just a thought.

It's an insurance/liability nightmare.
The cost would be prohibitive.
Thank you tort lawyers.

One nice thing about having an older car off guarantee is no concern
about going to locations such as Speedy for an oil change.
I call ahead, they fit me right in and I'm out complete in 20 to 30
minutes. Also I can see my car while I drink coffee and read the paper.
If they need to discuss anything we walk to the car and look it over, my
car doesn't disappear into some back service room.
Old can be much more convenient. >> Stay informed about: Finally Had It with My Subaru Dealer |

You can take a new car anywhere you want, too. I just don't trust the
"Speedy" type places. >> Stay informed about: Finally Had It with My Subaru Dealer |

I am amazed at how poorly people are trained when it comes to
customer service. It's not limited to any geographic area or
any type of service, it's an epidemic. I took my little baja in
for it's first "free" oil change today. Called ahead of time to see if
I needed an appointment. He said no..just come in before 3
and it's no problem. I got there just after one and it took over
an hour. An hour for a fricken oil change. When I told him
it was taking too long I got the "it always takes an hour".
"oh yeah? only here. this isn't my first oil change and it's
never taken an hour before".
"well it always takes an hour. I'm sorry, I thought I was
doing you a favor by fitting you in"
A FAVOR??? what the hell... and here I thought they got
paid for it. I didn't realize he was there just out of the goodness
of his heart. Why would anyone be confrontational with a
customer? The correct response would have been. "sorry, should
have told you on the phone that due to the thoroughness of our
technicians, even oil changes can take an hour. I apologize for
making you wait". Then after I leave he can rant and rave at what
an ungrateful wench I was. sigh... Doesn't anyone train their
employees in customer service anymore?

????? If I make an appointment for something 4 weeks from now
I might call the day before to confirm (if they don't call me) but
I have never called and confirmed an appointment for a friggin
oil change. I can't remember the last time I had to make an appt
for an oil change but apparently that's common with Subaru dealers
since I just found out mine is the same. The error regarding the
appointment is not a big deal. Their response to the problem is
a very big deal. If one of my employees ever got confrontational
with a customer like that I would be looking to replace them
real fast. How you respond to problems makes all the difference
in the world. No one expects perfection but I do expect to be
treated like the paying customer I am.

You're making a mighty big assumption. Some people prefer to
use the dealership for maintenance...even oil changes...for as long
as the car is under warranty. It just makes life a lot easier when
if you have a warranty issue when all of your scheduled maintenance
is in their computer. Color me a little sensitive. I took a vacation
day today to take care of a bunch of personal stuff..including an
oil change.

By the time I am home from work, I have maybe an hour before it is
getting dark. On the weekends the last thing I want to do is car
maintenance. I am a 53 year-old woman. YES, I have changed oil in the
past. My dad taught me. I used to do all my own car maintenance, and
my husband did his. Once when he threw his back out, I even installed
a new radiator in his car while he stood there and told me what to do.
I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I just don't want to anymore. I
have always hated -- despised -- doing car work. YUCK! By the time
you have been working for 35 or so years, you hopefully have enough
money to take your car IN for that sort of thing. So yeah, I don't
want to.
