Post subject: Engine noise on startup- 3800 GM V-6

I've heard several including mine make a rattle sound for the first second or so when this motor starts up. It sounds like something is not getting oil or perhaps a piston slapping. Brand new 2006 Impalas do it...very few don't. Then they rattle until they warm up. Has anybody been able to find out what causes this?

Well I've obtained an answer to my own question, In case anyone is interested, that 1 second 'crackle' sound this engine makes is the starter drive motorizing from the spin of the flywheel. At times, it doesn't diengage fast enough causing this sound. This is another 'oops' from the engineers at GM

It is piston slap.GM knows thay have this problem-they say it will not affect the durability of the engine and I have never seen one fail because of this.they do have a new piston design to fix this problem-you may be able to get the dealer to replace them . If it was me I would deal with the noise vs. having someone tear the engine apart-if you ever have any car questions go to yourautoadvisor.com. they can answer them

Its not too bad in mine. I'm going to switch it over to synthetic oil next oil change.....the dealer tells me the 3800's are not really known to have this condition like the 3100's and the 3400's. They sound like diesels when they're cold. I know somebody that had the pistons replaced and it didn't make any difference. I would never let a dealer tear down an engine unless it really needed it.
