2003 RAV4, 80k miles now, bought new, have changed the oil every 3 to 4000 miles, have done all scheduled service. For the past year or so I've noticed a puff of blue smoke on startup. Dealer has said it is no big deal. Now the blue smoke is more noticable, and it's going through a quart of oil ev..
« OldRoads: Probably the valve guides and or seals. Possibly rings and or pistons. Not aware of any recalls. Remove the spark plugs and check for any major oil fouling, and compression check.(Differ.. »
« "OldRoads": Before you spend a lot of money, check the PCV valve and hoses. At 80k miles there is a good chance the PCV valve is partially blocked. Ed »
« OldRoads: If you reported this while the vehicle was in warranty, and they have a record of it, you may still be covered. Good luck. In the meantime, you may want to apply for a high-credit line cr.. »
« Jeff: Well, I like the PVC valve option. If it's not the PVC valve, what do you think it would cost for new valve guides and seats? I'm thinking valves because the smoke only shows on startup. Vin -.. »

My car has had oil leak after oil leak and yet I always seem to have something burning, even after I get all of my oil leaks fixed (or atleast i am told they are fixed by the shop). I was told, the original reason why my car was burning oil had to do with my oil pan gasket needing to be replaced...

I have a 2000 OBW with 140,000 miles. When I park the car after a few miles driving, there is a strong smell of burning fluid. The local repair shop has cleaned the engine compartment and driven the car, but cannot find evidence of fluid leaking on to a hot surface. Any ideas?
« David Crist: Could be cam cover gaskets, leaking tiny amounts of oil onto the hot exhaust. You'll see signs of burnt oil on the exhausts, if you can get under there to see. Usually not much of a pro.. »
« David Crist: If it smells like toasted marshmallows (sweet) that is coolant(check your coolant level immediately.) If it smells very nasty - probably CV joint grease escaping from a split boot and.. »
« "David Crist": Check for torn CV joint boots. CV grease may be getting flung onto the exhaust. »
« David Crist: Is the smell from the engine compartment or does it come from the heater ducts? Sometimes noxious stuff gets sucked into the intake of the heater and then smells up the car. BTW, as I.. »

A while back the head gasket went in my tercel ('93): I had it fixed along with getting the valves redone, i week later the car over heated. I found that the garage didn't tighten one of the clamps on the hose from the rad to the engine. I took it back and they said it didn't hurt anything, but it..

Hi, I have a 1997 Chrysler Voyageur minivan ... about 260,000 kilometres on it. After even very short drives, I am smelling burning oil and occasionally some slight amounts of smoke emerge from under the hood ... even after a four minute drive. I believe this is an oil seepage. Is this something ..

Hello All, Well, I finally gave up on my '94 1500 4x4 Ram in January and bought a leftover 2005. I got a great deal on 1500 Ram 4 x4 Thunderroad with a Hemi, 11,500 off of sticker. I currently have 5000 miles on the engine. I changed the oil at 3K with Castrol 5w-20 as directed by the ownes man..
« "hockeydad": Recomanded or not, 5w20 is really thin ans it will reduce oil pressure, increase consumption and make it more prone to tick at a idle for reduced oil pressure at a idle. I suggest that .. »
« I would bring it in to the dealer A.S.A.P. "hockeydad": »
« "Xclimation": Why, 1 quart per 2000 miles is not a warranty fix as it is well within limits. Like I said earlier, use a different grade of oil. ----------------- The SnoMan http://www.thesnoman.com »
« Consuming a pint of oil every 1k miles well past the break-in period is not normal. Neither is the "tick". Take it to the dealer while it's in warranty and get it checked. Accept no "excuses". You w.. »

Lent my Golf 1.8 to a friend, when he returned it the oil level had dropped below min (not off the stick) and the coolant level had dropped below min. Never lost any coolant before. Car normally consumes a negligible amount of oil. Now I have noticed two new things. After a short motor way trip th..
