Why do some refer to vettes as a c1 or c2? What year are these models?
Just curious.

I might add that the C stands for Corvette/Chevrolet and the number stands for
the generation number. It was started by the good folks at GM to denote the
fifth generation Corvette, 1997 through 2004. The C5 moniker caught on and the
advertising gurus pushed it to the max. Then it was picked up by the Corvette
crowd and they run it backwards to include the other perceived significant model
changes. That was limited by the fact the they only had 4 generation to split up
everything that was built before the 1997 Corvette. There have been many
arguments as to how the splits were applied such as the C6 that is so much the
C5, (my undying opinion). You only need to go back to the C3 to see that there
were more changes to that series in body components, engines, transmissions and
body skin to represent at least 3 more generations with only the windshield,
sub-structure parts, and some suspension parts covering the entire model build.

But what the hey, they were built to drive, not to bitch about.

Dad pretty well hit it here. The way they go and most agree:

C1 - 1953 to 1962
C2 - 1963 to 1967
C3 - 1968 to 1982
C4 - 1984 to 1996
C5 - 1997 to 2004
C6 - 2005 to ...

The way they actually break down with major changes:

C1 - 1953 to 1962
C1.1 - 1953 to 1955
C1.2 - 1956 to 1957
C1.3 - 1958 to 1960
C1.4 - 1961 to 1962

C2 - 1963 to 1967
(not enough change to break, although the big block Mark IV 396 and 427
were added.)

C3 - 1968 to 1982
C3.1 - 1968 to 1972 (chrome bumper cars)
C3.2 - 1973 to 1977 (rubber bumper cars)
C3.3 - 1978 to 1982 (fastback coupes)

C4 - 1984 to 1996 (no 1983 model)
C4.1 - 1984 to 1990 (sharp edged bumpers)
C4.2 - 1991 to 1996 (rounded bumpers)
(ZR-1 falls in here 1989 (pre-production) to 1995 and could be
another.)

C5 - 1997 to 2004

C6 - 2005 to ... (More like C5.2 in many respects)
