Hi All,
I've searched on this but can only find vague references to possible crank
sensor failure from 2002 ...
Any more recent thoughts on this?
Symptoms are stalling when hot both on coastdown and idling in stationary
traffic ... you can see and feel it losing control of idle speed and it
evetually loses it and it dies - recently its been reluactant to restart
also ...

When mine failed it was also very 'flat' pulling away from rest after
re-starting. However, it threw up a code showing the crank sensor to be at
fault so it's worth checking. It's a fairly easy DIY job to fit a new one,
and it cost me about 50 gbp. So may be worth just changing it if you have
to pay a similar amount to have the codes read.

aha - s'funny you say that coz I recently posted about a flat spot which I
put down to a failing vanos unit but perhaps I should look at the crank
sensor first ...
I am loathed to pay main dealer costs for a 10year old car ... can
independant types read codes etc these days? >> Stay informed about: E39 2.8i stalling when hot query |

If they specialize in BMW/euro cars, they usually can.
If you post where you're from, someone may be able to even recommend a good
indy shop near you.

I dunno - I have a Peake code reader.

So do I. With the adapter for the serial connector-looking under-dash
OBD as well as the circular connector on the engine.
Mine works fine on a 1991 e30 and a 2001 e39. It will also reset
codes. I think the code reader and the extra OBD2 cable were about
$100 or so.

aha - I had the codes read at my local garage and indeed the crank sensor is
"impausible or missing" ... A quick blast to my local GSF provided a new one
for about £50 and I shall fit it tomorrow ...
I understand the sensor picks up from the front pulley but it was not
visible from on top - does it need to come off from underneath?

It can be done from the top - take off the fan shroud and fan/coupling.

one minute to locate and undo the sensor bolt (it's just under the bottom
hose at engine end)
30 minutes to clear enough engine bay debris to access where the sensor plug
joins the loom and unthread the cable ! Remove front lifting eye, oil
filter cover, breather hose, beauty cover and two fiddly c-clips holding the
cable shield across the front of the engine ...
it runs a LOT smoother and quicker and no stalling yet ...
thanks all

Yes - plugging it in is the awkward part. Probably easier with small hands
- like many of these jobs.

Hopefully sorted.
