The drivers remote locking and window motor both seem to be acting up on
our 1997 323i 4 door saloon. The lock mostly doesn't unlock (remotely)
and window is starting to scrap or grind. My partner described it as
falling apart and nearly stopping, but sounds like some minor scratching
inside to me, motor feels strong.

Will have a more detailed look tonight and check inside the door, any clues?

No help on the door - my remote / lock has been intermittent for
years. It seems the closer I get to the car the more likely it will
work - but putting a new battery in doesn't improve the odds of it
working. Dunno on this one.

When the windows squeak going up / down I spray them (both inside and
out) with the silicon spray that leaves a white residue behind. Send
them up / down many times and the noise reduces. Then I clean with
windows and hope for the best. The drivers side window has a clunk
when it is going down and I was told it was the white neoprene guides
inside. Both too costly for me to deal with so I put up with the
problems.

It wasn't the remote, it was the lock motor that was the problem. The
alarm and other doors where working ok. Anyway it just needed
lubricated, however has got a bit stiff again after about 2 weeks. WD40
doesn't last I suppose, probably needs a complete dissasemble, clean and
regrease, but too dark and cold at the moment.

Didn't find any problems with the window.

WD-40 is not a lubricant and it will make the problem worse when it
leaves gunk and varnish inside.

Try using something like Superlube if you absolutely HAVE to use a spray
inside one of those things instead of a proper teardown.

I'll say that the E28 motors have oil points where you can just remove a
little plastic cap and drop some light machine oil in. They are clearly
intended for periodic maintenance.
