Perhaps the way goods are transported should be rethought then? Could
the goods be produced closer to where they are sold? (Instead of the
other side of the country or the world.) Of course this isn't possible
in all cases.
The current state of affairs was built on the assumption of low energy
costs (which leads to low shipping costs). This assumption will
probably no longer be true in the not too distant future.
BTW, does anyone know if there are hybrid systems tractor units? I've
heard of trains using a turbine to create electricity, and then use it
to drive electric engines, but not too much about hybrid trucks.

Oh, wait -- I think I've got the perfect answer. First, let's get rid
of all environmental laws. Then, let's give a few billions of our tax
dollars to the oil companies, so they can build their new refineries
without putting too much of a dent in their profits.
Perfect! So obvious, I wonder why the Republicans haven't thought of it
yet. >> Stay informed about: Diesel prices rediculous!! |

Yes, there were some prototypes (or even small series) of hybrid
trucks, targeted for a city use.
On the highway such a truck does not save anything, as most of the time
it runs with a constant speed and there is nothing to save. >> Stay informed about: Diesel prices rediculous!! |

I am a conservative but agree with your statement. I am sure they
would love to this and still might. >> Stay informed about: Diesel prices rediculous!! |

I'm conservative, too -- this is another illustration of how the
Republican party is really not conservative at all. But -- let's not
let politics get into the VW newsgroup. Sorry about the political
commentary, I'll shut up about it now. >> Stay informed about: Diesel prices rediculous!! |

Right; political discussions belong to the aircooled VW group, not the
watercooled one. >> Stay informed about: Diesel prices rediculous!! |

But bringing up party affiliations is just getting off track. We should be
able to discuss the problems inherent with fossil fuels in this NG, how to
help solve those problems, and let others in this NG know the technical
steps some of us may have taken to ease the situation with our water-cooled
VWs. These are really not partisan problems, they are EVERYONE's problems. >> Stay informed about: Diesel prices rediculous!! |

I don't post much, but since this thread is about diesel prices, and someone
mentioned hydrogen. I,d like to say that hydrogen isn't the way to go.
Hydrogen isn't free energy. Hydrogen is an energy carrier. Hydrogen doesn't
exist in gas form on Earth. It has to be made, extracted from natural gas,
or extracted from water, {electrolosis}. Which is very expensive. it cost
more energy to make hydrogen then you can get from it. The USA makes enough
hydrogen to power 30 million cars, but nobody is using it. It cost too much.
No ones building any oil refineries, let alone a hydrogen plant. It has the
lowest energy content by volume, Say buy buy to your trunk. Theres no pipe
lines, storage, delivery, nothing. Nobody can get it. Everything would have
to be built from scratch. So if it were even feasable in the next 20 years .
The consumer would pay dearly for it.
