Post subject: Corolla Belt Tensioner

http://Corolla.autoboardz.com/2003-Corolla-belt-tensioner-ftopict182039.html (2003 Corolla, what's up with the belt tensioner?)
I had to have the belt tensioner replaced twice on my 2003 Corolla, and it only has 46,000 miles on it. Shouldn't the belt tensioner last longer than an average of 23,000 miles? Hell, the belts last a lot longer than that!! Is Toyota going to redesign that part so it doesn't wear out almost ..
"That Guy": Toyota is generally pretty good at re-designing parts that need replacement more frequently than normal. -- Ray O (correct punctuation to reply)

Has anyone seen problems w/tensioner on these cars? 18000 miles and this one vibrates its ass off, creating a noise like an exhaust pipe contacting a subframe when you accelerate....it should be warrantiable, just curious. The tensioner looks like it has a tiny shock absorber built onto the fulcru..

The shop says the belt needs replaced (that's fine, I haven't done it in 60,000 miles..) and they also said the tensioner pulley had a bearing going out causing the noise. They're quoting $150 for the belt and tensioner pul..
"mrsteveo": Whether the price is reasonable or not depends on where you are located. Large metro areas tend to be higher than rural areas. $150 for the belt tensioner, and about an hour and a qua..
mrsteveo: $150 for OEM is OK, I guess. Aftermarket belts go for $20-30 and a tensioner is $30-60. But make sure this is it! The manual says...but the manual doesn't have ears to pinpoint the sound...
Hachiroku ハチロク: I just have my tensioner pulley replaced for my 2001 Corolla for $305 at Dealer(not include belt). I was told that tensioner pulley was worn and belt was loosen up. I was war..
FWIW, it appears there was a TSB regarding the tensioner assembly in some Toyota vehicles including the 2002 Corolla. I also do a 7 hour freeway drive at about 80mph once a month too. Dunno if that ..
