Post subject: Coolant issues with my truck

I have a 91 GMC 5.7 engine 265,000kms. Recent problem with a fluid dump with temp guage rising and falling. I filled up with antifreeze and could find no leaks. Drove to work this am and after 30 minutes on the road Rad cap was cold to the touch. Any suggestions for a cheap fix? Thanks.
