How hard (or possible) is it to connect a PDA (let's say Dell AXIM)
directly to a DSLR (let's say 20D) such that you can upload images?

It's not hard at all...
....assuming you don't consider writing your own drivers/code "hard."

Being able to write your own drivers won't help a bit unless the
PDA is one of the few that can act as a USB Master device. I don't
think that Dell's AXIM is one of those.

Doesn't the Axim use CF cards? Maybe I'm missing something, but what would
be so difficult about removing the card from the camera and popping it into
the Axim? Sure seems easier than buying extra equipment.

The AXIM uses SD cards. There may be an adapter available. It sounds
like this is a little 'iffy' from all the responses. Even if the USB
bridge worked. I would not want to blanket copy all the files. For me
this isn't a necessity, just thought that if it was easy to do, might
be better for viewing than the tiny screen on the camera....oh well!

I wouldn't be so sure that would work. Those USB bridges work only with
drives acting as a "mass storage device". A PDA doesn't act as one,
needing specialized drivers to get connected.

Why do you want to upload an image to your PDA ? cause it stores more space
or what ?
Axim uses CF [and SD] media which you can put to your DSLR as well.

IF you want bigger screen [say 17" ] use a Nikon D2 family and FTP it up to
your laptop.

I own an Axim X50v. None of the Axim line have the hardware to act as a
USB host; so you can't connect the camera directly to the Axim. The
Toshibas and LOOX handhelds do, but you need drivers written
specifically for each device you attach - and AFAIK, you'd need a
degree in CompSci to have the skills required to do that. In reality
PocketPC's with USB host capabilities are only meant to be used with
very specific devices, like GPS units.

The X50/X50v Axim has both an SD and a CF slot; I don't think the
others can take CF. When I want to, I just pop my camera's CF into the
slot and look at the pics - it's dismally slow, though; much faster in
a USB 2.0 reader with a laptop. As well, the colors are not accurate,
so you can't edit properly.

I also have a Delkin USB bridge; it requires devices that are designed
to automatically mount as a drive on Windows 2000/XP; the Axim doesn't
do that, it has custom drivers. As soon as I get my Axim (at work) in
proximity with my camera and the Delkin Bridge (at home) I'll hook it
up to see for sure, and I'll report in this thread. I kinda doubt it,
though.

IMHO, PocketPC's are disappointing at best when it comes to
photography. Instead of an Axim, get an old small notebook and upgrade
to a big HDD; it'll only cost a couple hundred more.
