The oil in a BMW 5-series needs to be changed every 5,000 miles or 6 months, depending on the type of oil you buy. The oil filter is recommended to be changed only once a year or every other oil change. However, according to Haynes, a renowned automotive repair manual provider, it is best to change the oil filter with every oil change. The filter is not expensive, and the benefits it gives you to change your filter frequently are more than worth it.
