Hi,

I have a VVTL-I engine with 80,000 miles covered.

There is a high pitch squealing noise from the left hand side of the
engine compartment. It sounds a bit like a there is a belt catching around
that area. It is a constant squeal that varies with engine speed.

I know the alternator belt is around that area, but what else could it
be?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks!

Mark.

Get a can of Belt Dressing from AutoZone, Walmart, etc., spray the belt, if
the squeal goes away (even temporarily), have the belt replaced. There's a
96.21% chance that's you problem.

How did you arrive at the 96.21% calculation Steve?

And if the sound doesn't go away, you likely have a bearing going bad on
one of those belt-driven gadgets. My corolla was doing that for a day
or few, and then one evening was really bad. While trying to locate the
source with a stethascope, the bearings in the water pump all went
crossways and everywhere, jamming the pump and smoking the belt before I
could get around and shut off the engine. Good thing I was home.

Oh, and if you don't have any belt dressing, I'd try water. It will
usually quiet a noisy belt.

I made it up and it's correct until someone proves me wrong!

My guess is that you need to replace one or more of the belts on your
engine. You probably only NEED to replace one, but I would replace them all.

At that mileage if not already done, it should be changed.

However, my Celica timing belt was squealing at 10K miles! We stopped
that using an aerosol 'belt conditioner'. I eventually changed the
timing belt at 60K miles. This new one is now squealing with 70K
showing. It must be a Celica thing.........

I have had the belt replaced, and it appears to be quiet again.
